Non-metallic metal (NMM) is a miniature-painting technique that renders armor and weapons using ordinary matte paint instead of metallic pigment. The illusion comes from value contrast alone — light and dark areas placed to mimic a single light source, plus one sharp specular highlight. It takes roughly 3 to 6 times longer than a metallic basecoat.

NMM vs. true metallic paint

Painters new to the hobby often assume NMM is a fancier version of a metallic basecoat. It isn't — they're solving different problems.

True metallic paint contains actual metal flake, so it reflects real light and looks convincing from across a table with almost no extra work. NMM paints the idea of a reflection using flat color, which takes longer but gives you full control over the light source, the color temperature, and how the piece reads in a photo — metallic flake tends to grain up and go flat or blotchy under a camera flash or studio light, which is exactly where NMM holds up.

What the technique actually involves

How to paint it, step by step

  1. Fix the light source first

    Decide where the light is coming from before you touch a brush. Everything after this step is just following that decision consistently across every metal area on the model.

  2. Block in the mid-value base

    Cover the whole metal area in a single mid-tone — grey-blue for steel, warm brown for bronze or gold. This is the value everything else builds from.

  3. Lay in the shadow shapes

    Paint a darker value into the areas facing away from your light source. Keep the shapes broad and geometric, not soft gradients — metal reflects in blocks, not blends.

  4. Step up the highlights

    Add two or three progressively lighter values, each one covering a smaller area than the last, working toward the point closest to the light.

  5. Place the specular highlight

    Finish with one small, sharp, high-contrast highlight — near-white or the brightest color in your palette — right at the point the light would hit hardest. This single mark does more than any blending underneath it.

The mistakes that give it away

NMM fails in predictable ways, and all of them come from treating it like skin or cloth instead of metal.

  • Smooth, blended transitions. Skin and cloth blend softly between values. Metal doesn't — it jumps between blocks of value with harder edges. Over-blending is the single most common reason an NMM attempt reads as plastic.
  • Too small a value range. If your darkest shadow and brightest highlight aren't far apart, the surface won't read as reflective at all — just flat and grey.
  • An inconsistent light source. Highlights pointing different directions on different parts of the same model is the fastest way to break the illusion, even if each individual area looks fine on its own.

When to use it and when to skip it

NMM is a deliberate trade of time for control. Reach for it when the payoff justifies the extra hours; skip it when it doesn't.

  • Use it on a single display or competition model, when you want a specific stylized light (a red glow, a torch-lit scene), or when the piece will mainly be seen in photos rather than across a gaming table.
  • Skip it on a full army you need finished this month, or anywhere true metallic paint's quick basecoat-and-wash will read fine at arm's length.
