How to strip paint from a miniature

A secondhand model, an old project you want to redo, a paint job gone badly wrong — stripping gets you back to bare plastic or resin. The two real methods, and the material test that saves a resin model from damage.

Stripping paint from a miniature means soaking it in a solvent — usually isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated paint-stripping solution — until the old paint softens and can be scrubbed off with a toothbrush, returning the model to bare plastic, resin or metal ready for a fresh coat of primer.

Test your material first

This is the step that gets skipped and causes real damage. Isopropyl alcohol is safe on most hard plastic miniatures, but stripping solutions — and even alcohol on some soft PVC or certain resins — can warp, soften or melt the wrong material. Before soaking a whole model, dunk one small, hidden part (a base tab, an unused bit from the sprue) for the same amount of time you plan to soak the model. If it holds up, proceed. If it goes soft or tacky, stop and use a milder method.

Isopropyl alcohol soak

The most common beginner-recommended method: cheap, widely available, and gentle enough for most hard-plastic miniatures. Submerge the model fully in isopropyl alcohol (90%+ concentration works faster than lower grades) in a sealed, ventilated container. Soak time varies with paint thickness and how many layers are on the model — check progress periodically rather than assuming a fixed time.

Dedicated stripping solutions

Purpose-made stripping products work faster and cut through heavier or older paint more reliably than alcohol alone, but they're also harsher — this is exactly where the material test above matters most. Follow the product's own soak-time guidance rather than guessing, and always work in a ventilated space.

The process, step by step

  1. Test a hidden spot first

    Confirm the material holds up before committing the whole model — this is the step that prevents real damage.

  2. Soak fully submerged, sealed and ventilated

    Patience matters more than force here. Check periodically rather than assuming a fixed soak time.

  3. Scrub gently with an old toothbrush

    Work in the recesses where paint tends to hold on longest. A second short soak clears stubborn spots rather than aggressive scrubbing.

  4. Rinse and dry fully before re-priming

    Any leftover solvent or moisture under a fresh coat of primer can cause exactly the frosted, grainy texture covered in fixing paint mistakes. Let it dry completely, then head to choosing a primer for the restart.

Safety note

Work in a ventilated space with either method, and keep solvents away from open flame. If you're stripping a model you didn't originally build or aren't sure of the material on, the hidden-spot test above is not optional — some resins and soft plastics react badly to solvents that are perfectly safe on hard styrene plastic.
