How to choose, in three questions

  1. What are you actually painting — one miniature at a time, or an army? One at a time points at gravity-feed. A 20+ model army or terrain points at siphon-feed for the bigger reservoir.
  2. Do you already own a compressor? If not, buy the airbrush and compressor together as a matched setup rather than guessing at compatibility separately — a compressor that can't hold steady low pressure will fight you on every fine line.
  3. Are you planning to do zenithal priming only, or work toward NMM and OSL by hand afterward? Zenithal-only work tolerates a slightly larger needle. Fine highlight and glow work rewards the smallest needle you can control.

What needle size do I need for miniatures?

0.2–0.3mm for most miniature work. That range gives thin enough lines for zenithal highlights and edge work without clogging constantly on thinned acrylic paint.

Is single-action or dual-action better for miniatures?

Dual-action, for control. Single-action fixes the air-to-paint ratio, which is fine for flat basecoats but fights you the moment you want a thin gradient or a tight highlight line.

Gravity-feed or siphon-feed for a single miniature?

Gravity-feed. The smaller top cup needs less paint to prime and is faster to flush between the many colour changes one miniature usually goes through. Save siphon-feed for basecoating whole armies or terrain in one sitting.

Do I need a separate compressor?

Yes, unless you buy a bundled kit. Miniature work runs at low, steady pressure — roughly 15–30 PSI — so the compressor matters as much as the airbrush itself. Buy them matched rather than mixing a random compressor with a premium airbrush.

Does an airbrush replace a paintbrush?

No. An airbrush is fastest for basecoats, zenithal priming and smooth gradients. Edge highlights, fine detail, faces and NMM/OSL specular highlights are still done by hand with a brush afterward.

Is an airbrush worth it for a beginner?
